One of the best ways to recharge during the busy year is to fully immerse yourself in nature. Taking a camping trip will have you feeling full of life. Camping is a time to let loose, slow down, and enjoy the little moments you may easily over look day-to-day. While camping is mostly relaxing and stress free, you might find yourself bored. Being bored is apart of life but doesn’t have to be a part of your camping experience. Here are somethings we recommend trying on your next Nebraska Sandhills camping adventure!

Games

Games are always fun for all ages. Whether you’re camping with a group of friends or your large family, games are always sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Spoons is a game to play anytime of the day. All you need for this game is a deck of cards and one less spoon than everyone that is playing (if you have 5 players you will need 4 spoons). If you don’t have spoons, get creative. Use rocks, pine cones, or sticks! Place what you’re using in the center of the table, then deal four cards to every player, leave them face up on the table. Now the dealer will pull one card at a time from the deck, they can either keep it or pass it to their left. That person can either keep or pass as well. The dealer will continue this process until someone in the group gets four-of-a-kind. When someone gets four-of-a-kind that person grabs a spoon from the center and everyone races behind them to get a spoon of their own. Whoever doesn’t end up with a spoon is eliminated. Keep playing until you have a winner! Watch out, things might get competitive!

Campfire charades is a lighthearted game, that is perfect for the end of the night when everyone is enjoying sitting around the campfire. Split into teams and choose a category. Have everyone put a clue on a piece of paper into a hat or jar. Have the actor pick one clue out. Now it’s time to act! Without talking, try to portray what is on the piece of paper! Determine how much time the actor has for their team to come up with an answer, and, if they get the right answer how many points it will be worth! Also, you could let the other team “steal” if they think they have the answer! Have fun with it, come up with your own rules or cut some rules. This game is fully customizable so you can have the best time possible.

Cooking

Cooking anytime can be a nice way to spend time with the people you love. Cooking while camping can be a different story. Sometimes it’s stressful to come up with what you will be eating. You don’t want something that requires too many steps or too many utensils. Here are two easy, and delicious recipes.

Campfire Nachos: Nachos are versatile, load up on what you love and skip what you don’t. For this recipe you will need a Dutch oven or cast-iron skillet with a lid. If you don’t have a lid, don’t worry, you can use a sheet of aluminum foil. Tip: line the bottom of your Dutch oven or skillet with parchment paper for easy clean up!  Put your tortilla chips at the bottom then load up with the toppings you’ll want cooked on top. You can melt a mix of shredded cheeses or your favorite canned nacho cheese! After everything is cooked to your liking, load up your plate!

Campfire Banana Boats: This quick, easy dessert is a hybrid between a smore and a banana split. You can’t go wrong! Just split your banana in half, peel still on, not cut all the way through. Stuff with toppings of your choice. Some ideas for toppings are, chocolate chips, peanut butter, peanuts, fruit, shredded coconut, mini marshmallows, honey, caramel sauce or Nutella! The options are endless. Wrap your banana tightly in foil and place on the cooking rack in the campfire, topping side up! This will only take a few minutes and then your creation is ready to enjoy!

Hiking

Hiking while camping go hand in hand. Check out our last blog post about Hiking near Mullen Nebraska:

An activity to do while hiking is identifying plants and wildlife around you to keep you mindful and in the moment. Everyone can join in looking for different flowers, birds and butterflies. You can even make a game of it; whoever find the most or finds things the quickest, wins!
